THE NEXT DAY, RACHEL stood in front of the hat shop counter.

“Fifty dollars.”

“Fifty? Dollars?” Prilla had meant to hurt her family financially.

“Yes ma’am.”

How did a simple straw hat possibly cost fifty dollars? Prilla had somehow snatched it and made sport with fifty whole dollars. Was a prank against her so valuable?

Her spirit sank. She only had thirty-five dollars. It would have to do. Mrs. Kendrick was right. Hats were like trademarks. Mrs. Kendrick wouldn’t be able to wear it after last Sunday.

She almost decided to question the counter girl but thought better of it. Prilla Chardin was their customer. A high value customer. They could afford to lose Rachel’s business, but not the Chardin’s.

There was nothing else for it. With her parents blessing, she had to pay for the hat.
